What are the symptoms?

Ectopic Ureter puppies are frequently referred to as “wet puppies” because they are always wet from uncontrolled urine leakage.  In a female puppy, the defect is normally detected between a few days old and eight weeks of age.  Sometimes, it can appear around six to eight months, but this is less likely.  The defect is caused by the ureter(s) not connected correctly from the kidney to the bladder.  It can be unilateral or bilateral (one ureter affected or both ureters).  The defect can vary in the diagnosis.  In some cases the ureter does not connect to the bladder at all and in other cases the ureter can enter the bladder, run close to the wall and end at the bottom of the bladder.  In both cases, the result is uncontrollable “leaking” of urine from a female puppy.  Most breeders notice the leaking urine in a female puppy around three to four weeks of age.  The reason for detecting it so late, is that early on the dam normally cleans the puppies frequently and it is difficult to tell if the puppy is actually leaking.  Once the dam is away from the puppies for a period of time, it becomes more evident as the puppy is always wet.

The defect also occurs in male puppies, but is not normally seen until they are adults.  More on this is discussed in the “What is the incidence ….” section.

How is the defect diagnosed?

Detection and analysis of the defect can sometimes be very frustrating if the breeder’s vet is not familiar with the defect.

The original test for detecting an ectopic ureter defect was to use a dye test and then x-ray the puppy to determine if the ureters were connected properly.  This is not always reliable because sometimes one ureter can hide behind organs and not be seen on the x-rays.  Ultrasound tests can be performed, but require someone with outstanding skill and experience.  Many vets consider cystoscopy to be the best approach to diagnosis.

Remedies for fixing the defect

Depending on the outcome of the diagnosis, the common remedies have been to either euthanize the puppy or have corrective surgery performed.  Surgery can include repairing the ureter to connect properly to the bladder or in some cases veterinarians have removed one kidney and the ureter if the condition is unilateral.  Normally the expense of the procedures leads the breeder to choose euthanizing the puppy since the affected puppy should not be bred from.  Costs can vary by country and type of surgery – generally running from $500 to $5,000.

Is it hereditary or congenital?

Because veterinarians do not see the defect that often, they often tend to think it is sporadic and not inherited.  However, it is most definitely a hereditary defect and at this time it is believed that it does require two carriers to produce the defect.  It is also known to frequently skip several generations before appearing again. These are classic features of recessive disease traits.  Unfortunately without knowing what the genetic cause of the condition is, it is impossible to be certain of the pattern of inheritance.  

What is the incidence of ectopic ureter in Golden Retrievers?

Based upon our information it appears that this defect is rare in the golden retriever with less than 2% of puppies being affected.  When an affected puppy is produced, it is usually the only abnormal puppy in the litter (although this is not always the case). True incidence is a bit difficult since we know that affected male dogs may not show signs until they reach an adult age or perhaps never developed recognizable signs.  Affected males do not normally exhibit urine leakage until adulthood.  The difference in timeframes for females versus males is due to the difference in “plumbing”.  In the male dogs, the prostate gland acts as a muscle sphincter that limits the dribble of urine and the incontinence problem is known as “urethral sphincter muscle incompetence.”

Either through more awareness or more inbreeding, the number of instances does seem to be on the rise.  Also there appear to be “pockets” or “regions” that tend to have higher instances of the defect.  One of the more important aspects of the defect that GREUDNA.org have noted over the last few years, is that breeders who believe they are doing the breed good by importing dogs from overseas to expand the gene pool, are just as likely to have a litter with an ectopic ureter puppy or two as those who breed from local stock.

What is the history of the defect?

In my 18-month study of pedigrees from EU affected litters, I traced the defect back to a pair of dogs from the early 1930s.  These two dogs are behind nearly every show or dual purpose Golden Retriever in the world.  Because they were both champions and because it was at the beginning of the war years, this “couple” became one of the bottlenecks of the Golden Retriever breed.  In some EU affected pedigrees, these two dogs and a couple of their litter mates appear as many times as 327,416 incidents in a pedigree traced back to 1900.  That is a lot of inbreeding.  Which brings us to the fact that the number of unique ancestors in today’s Golden Retriever is somewhere around 0.07% or less – well below 1%.  In a pedigree traced back to 1900 with 1.9 to 2.5 million ancestors, only 3300 to 3500 will be unique.

In my pedigree research of nearly a hundred affected litters, there are four dogs who appear in multiple numbers in the first 9 generations in nearly every “English” Golden Retriever EU litter pedigree since 2000.  In the US and the “US” Golden Retrievers the number is slightly higher, but again the list of suspect dominate EU carriers is consistent.  It is important to note, that although we tend to “type” the Golden Retrievers by country type or activity type, 99.9% of all Golden Retrievers worldwide go back to four foundation pedigrees in the 1920s.  These pedigrees can be found on the website – www.standfastdata.co.uk   It is also my personal belief through my studies of the pedigrees that there are “dominate” carriers that tend to influence the risk of producing an ectopic ureter puppy.

There are early kennels who fell victim to the defect to a higher degree than others.  One of the earlier kennels in the UK did so much inbreeding that one of the suspect dominate EU carriers appears up to 10 times in a 5g pedigree and his half-brother appears 4 times.  More can be found on this topic in the GREUDNA.org fundraiser paper entitled Ectopic Ureter Defect in Golden Retrievers; Hereditary Blood Profile Study by Sy Guth and can be obtained with a donation on the GREUDNA.org website.

Most breeders do not have a high interest in the defect until it happens in their litter.  Then they become advocates for the DNA study, because it is normally the pick of the litter that is affected and the breeder is then devastated with the choices they have to make.

The percentage of affected puppies is ‘best guess” because for many decades the topic has been hidden by those affected by it.  Presumably this has been to protect their kennel name and breeding program.  Still today, there are many misconceptions about the defect that keeps it hidden away.  But through a campaign over the past 5 years, the topic is being more openly discussed and breeders are coming to realise that they did not create the defect and that it has been around for many decades if not a hundred years.

How can breeders avoid the defect?
Without a DNA test, there is no way to be sure which dogs are suspected EU carriers and which are not.  At this point in time and without the benefit of the DNA findings, if a bitch or dog are known to have produced an ectopic ureter puppy then I have termed them to be a “carrier.”  Common sense and common gene knowledge will dictate that a litter mate from an EU litter is at higher risk of being a carrier than normal.

Avoiding inbreeding or line breeding in the first 5g is not a guarantee to avoiding the defect.  From personal experience, both my EU litters in 2007 and 2009 had one and two EU pups respectively.  The dams and sires were different in each of the litters.  Both sires were from outside my kennel and neither of them had common ancestors to each other in the first 5g.  Nor did the sires and dams have any common ancestors to each other in the first 5g of the pedigrees.  Most breeders would term these litters an outcross mating.  However, going back just another two generations and all the common ancestors begin to appear.

In my 2007 pedigree there are only 3 known carriers or suspected dominate EU carriers in the first 5 generations.  However, there are 36 known carriers or suspected dominate EU carriers between the 6th and 10th generation.  In the 2009 pedigree there are 5 known carriers or suspected dominate EU carriers in the first 5 generations and there are 46 known carriers or suspected dominate EU carriers between the 6th and 10th generation.  Demonstrating that breeders need to be looking at pedigrees further back than 5 generations.  They also need to ask the tough question of the breeders behind their lines – “Do you know of any EU puppies behind this dog?”
 
How can breeders participate in the DNA study?
GREUDNA.org searched from December 2009 until 2013 to find an institution that was both qualified and willing to take on the ectopic ureter DNA study to find the markers for the defect and create a DNA test so that breeders could identify carriers from non-carriers.  By mating carriers to non-carriers, it is believed that a breeder can avoid the defect – thereby not having to throw the baby out with the bath water.  However, only the DNA test will provide us with all the answers.

In September 2013, Dr Josh Stern approached GREUDNA.org with an interest in partnering in an EU DNA project.  We agreed terms for a partnership in September 2013 and have been working to both educate and solicit and collect blood samples from affected puppies and those older dogs that were surgically corrected to provide DNA samples to UC Davis for this important DNA study.

Those Golden Retriever breeders / owners interested in partaking in the project can contact either GREUDNA.org or Dr Josh Stern at UC Davis to obtain the forms to submit blood samples.  In many cases, UC Davis will pay the costs to ship affected samples from overseas to their lab in California.

KUSA’S BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES FOR MEMBERS IN THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Background

Freedom of expression is guaranteed under the Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution, but this right does not extend to “advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion, and that constitutes incitement to cause harm”. The right to freedom of expression is counter-balanced by an individual’s right to privacy and dignity. The sensible and practical way of looking at this is that harmony will normally prevail for as long as this balance is maintained. Where harmony turns to acrimony is normally when one person’s rights start impacting negatively on the rights of others.

Social Media are useful tools for social networking and information-sharing, but are increasingly also employed for more sinister purposes by those who consider themselves entitled to act disparagingly towards others, or indulge in so-called cyber-bullying. Social Media are, in essence, Internet-based tools that enable the sharing of information, examples of which are social networking platforms (e.g. Facebook), microblogging services (e.g. Twitter), photo- and video-sharing services (e.g Instagram), but also include online discussion forums or any other platforms on which information is shared on the Internet.

Disparaging behaviour on Social Media includes the posting of any material on any Social Media platform which causes the targeted person to feel harmed, insulted, harassed, offended, embarrassed, humiliated or discriminated against. Cyber-bullying is an equally reprehensible indulgence which amounts to the use of Social Media to bully another person by posting messages of an intimidating or threatening nature, especially repeatedly.

Best practice

KUSA urges its members, in the use of Social Media, to

• act responsibly and advisedly and confine the purpose of posts to social networking and information-sharing;

• be at liberty to make fair comment on any matter, but to do so in a reasoned, civilized and courteous manner;

• avoid using abusive, profane, obscene or sexually-explicit language or material;

• refrain from being derogatory, disrespectful, malicious, vexatious, offensive or misleading or unfair in user-generated content posted;

• desist from posting content which can be construed as hate-speech, or discriminatory with regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion;

• refrain from spreading rumour or gossip, or making unsubstantiated claims.

A few useful considerations
Maintain privacy: Do not post confidential information and desist from discussing a situation involving named or pictured individuals without their permission.

Suitability for publication: If the content of your message is not appropriate for face-to-face conversation, it is probably not suitable for posting on a social networking site.

Think before you post: If you are angry or irritated about a subject or incident, it is always advisable to delay expressing your discontent until you have calmed down and can think rationally. Even if you should later decide to delete a contentious post, you’re likely to find that it had already been copied, or shared.

Be accurate: Any comment posted as fact should be verifiable.

Be aware of liability: Despite the seemingly unregulated nature of Social Media, the law fully applies in the online environment. You are responsible for what you post on your own site and on the sites of others and could be held liable for commentary deemed to be defamatory, obscene, or which infringes copyright. Also be cautious what you share; distributing others’ defamatory content also renders you liable under South African law.

KUSA’s involvement

KUSA’s jurisdiction is limited to the enforcement of its own Rules and Regulations applicable to breed registrations and licensed events and it has neither the authority, nor remit, to censor content on the Internet. Offensive material posted on Social Media can be reported to forum administrators who normally act swiftly to take it down. If the offensive content remains, it can lead to civil, or even criminal, prosecution.

The Disciplinary Rules of KUSA make limited provision for disciplinary action to be taken against a KUSA member for defamation, which would include defaming a person or entity on Social Media, in Rule 4.2:

4.2 No complaint may be lodged or entertained -

4.2.1 that is based on private agreements between KUSA members or persons to which KUSA is not a party, or in respect of the sale and purchase of any dog or personal insults, defamation, libel or slander uttered or made outside the precincts of a KUSA-licensed Show or meeting or event;

4.2.2 unless it contains sworn evidence of clear prejudice to KUSA or its officials or judges or members or a Club or a PC or as provided for in Schedule 3 Regulation 37 of the KUSA Constitution or that is prejudicial or injurious to the interests of canine affairs.

BUYING A PUPPY AND HOW TO AVOID GETTING SCAMMED 

Buying a puppy online is risky business.

When contemplating the purchase of a puppy, the internet can be an extremely useful research tool to narrow down the breeds likely to best suit your family’s circumstances and lifestyle. Unfortunately, the internet is also the place where scamsters lurk, ready to pounce whenever you start investigating the availability of puppies of your favoured breed(s). Always be mindful of the common law maxim, “caveat emptor” – “the buyer beware” – which has never rung truer than when applied to a purchase of a puppy, a deed often prompted by impulse, family pressure or emotion.  

It’s unwise and risky to search for a puppy online, but should you venture to do so, at least be forearmed with the knowledge to identify dodgy websites and fake social media pages. Be mindful of the fact that the people operating these invariably transient websites and other online platforms are artful and accomplished scamsters to which the unwitting public fall victim every day. Watch out for:

• A site flaunting the KUSA logo and, for your convenience, even KUSA Transfer of Ownership Forms (fake, of course). KUSA does not permit its logo to be used to attract puppy buyers and its official forms are not made available on other websites.
• A site that offers puppies of a variety of breeds for sale, including your favoured breed. Even if it’s not a scam site, it will undoubtedly be a puppy mill which no responsible person should ever support.
• Sites pushing so-called ‘designer’ breeds, usually at extortionist prices – Cockapoos, Labradoodles, Goldadors, Maltipoos – and a host of other crossbreeds with bizarre appellations. KUSA does not permit purebred dogs on its registry to be mated to other breeds.
• Sites advertising breeds in unusual colours; the more exotic the colour, the higher the price. You’re likely to find that these colours are not permitted under the breed standards of the breeds in question. Chances are they result from genetic defects, often culminating in severe health problems for the affected animal down the line.
• Sites giving unrealistic guarantees, such as puppies being fully house-trained at eight weeks of age.
• Sites quoting a flat fee for flying a puppy to any destination. Travel costs vary according to a puppy’s weight, size of crate, distance to be travelled, etc.
• Sites pledging to fly a puppy in an “air-conditioned crate” (at an additional cost, of course!) with a hefty quote for airport taxes, shipping costs, etc. Travel costs are readily available from airlines servicing a particular route and can also be established via https://www.petlounge.co.za/.

Should you make contact with one of these sites and start making enquiries, you risk exposing yourself to the following typical scenario:

• You’ll be probed on the breed you’re interested in, the sex and colour required and, voilà!, they’ll happen to have one “in stock”! The availability is often the serendipitous result of a “last-minute cancellation”, and you’ll be told that people are now queuing up for the puppy. The pressure is on; it’s first come, first served.
• The seller will always be in a remote location, so that there’s no chance of your visiting the premises.
• You’ll be made to feel special with a promise that, if you’re prepared to settle all the costs up front – final vaccination, flight, crate, travel costs to the airport – you’ll be allowed to jump the queue.
• You’re delighted and buckle under the pressure. You hasten to transfer the funds into a bank account provided.
• You are soon advised that the puppy has been booked on flight so-and-so, departing on some future date at whatever time and reminded to meet the flight your end by reporting to the freight section.
• When you’re about to leave for the airport to collect the puppy, a call from the seller... The airline is refusing to load the crate, because it’s a size too small for the puppy. They’re prepared to sell a crate one size up at a cost of Rxxx. You need to do an immediate transfer of funds as the flight is about to close. (Not to worry, the previous crate will be returned to the supplier and the cost refunded!)
• You relent once more and transfer the funds required.
• With this coup de grâce administered, all communication ceases. You’ll wait in vain for your puppy to arrive and the number of the seller will meet with a forbidding “the subscriber you have called is not available at present…”.

Help! – I’ve been scammed! 

If you believe you’ve been scammed, please report the scam to the Facebook Page Puppy SCAMS in South Africa. They investigate puppy scam websites (not Facebook pages) and ensure that puppy scam websites are listed on the AA419 database, a globally recognised organisation. You can reach the Puppy SCAMS in South Africa Facebook Page on https://www.facebook.com/groups/report.puppy.scms.south.africa/

Further essential steps:

• Contact the SA Fraud Prevention Service hotline – 083 123 7226
• Report the scam site to https://yima.org.za/reportscam
• Report the transaction to your bank’s fraud division
• Open a case against the “breeder” at your local police station, even though the contact details would invariably be fictitious. At least the receiver’s bank account will be placed on record.
• Report person and number to WhatsApp if WhatsApp messages exchanged.

Simple steps to avoid falling victim to scamsters.

• Research is key. The worst decision you can make is to succumb to impulse, which invariably impairs judgement and rational decision-making.
• Narrow down your choice of breeds by doing proper research by, inter alia:
  • Consulting the Breed Standards on the KUSA website to establish the purpose for which a breed was developed and its typical traits,
  • Consulting the numerous resources available online, e.g. articles on a breed, covering its ownership, wellbeing and possible genetic defects, and
  • Consulting your veterinarian on his/her experience with a breed you’re considering acquiring.
• Attend dog shows (consult the Events Calendar on the KUSA website) to meet and interact with breeders and owners of a particular breed.
• Contact KUSA to establish whether the breeder you intend buying from is a KUSA member in good standing, who registers puppies with KUSA.
• Visit this breeder at his/her premises to assess, first-hand, the conditions under which the puppies were raised or, if the breeder is in a remote location, arrange for a trusted person to do the investigation on your behalf. If satisfied that all is above board, request copies of the Sire and Dam’s KUSA Registration Certificates.
• Inform the breeder that you expect that, once the puppy to be purchased has been identified, you would be offered a purchase & sale agreement with full disclosure of the agreed terms, e.g.
  • The purchase price (the initial deposit to be paid to reserve the puppy and the fee to be paid in final settlement when taking possession of the puppy).
  • Any conditions attached to the sale (spay/neuter requirements, breeder’s restrictions, etc.).
  • Details of any additional Health Tests to be done and at what age.
  • Assurance that your puppy will be KUSA-registered and that its Certificate of Registration and Certified Pedigree will be provided to you within [state period], with the authorisation of transfer into your name duly completed and signed on the reverse (to enable you to transfer the puppy into your registered ownership).
• When the puppy is fetched, delivered or shipped, make sure that you receive its Vaccination Certificate, and a copy of any Health Tests already performed on the puppy. Some responsible breeders, who take pride in their breeding, will also provide the new owner with a “Puppy Book” containing interesting breed-specific information and often some puppy pictures.

Getting a healthy puppy

Getting a new puppy has never been easier. You can find puppies wherever you look: in newspapers, on Facebook and on Gumtree. And sometimes all you need to get a fluffy bundle of joy is to pay first. No questions asked.
Buying cheap is expensive. It might end up costing more than you ever imagined to keep your new puppy in your life. While buying a KUSA registered puppy is no guarantee for success, you can tip the scale in your favour by doing your research.

Finding the right breeder

Pass the test
KUSA Members are encouraged to do health screening tests prior to breeding, but the responsibility remains with the buyer to attain as much information as possible about the health status of the parents of the litter. It’s a good idea to get copies of the health test results for both parents prior to paying the deposit (if applicable).

Get it write
The Kennel Union has no legislative powers to adjudicate between parties in dispute over the purchase and sale of puppies. We strongly recommend that a written and signed purchase and sale agreement be entered into between the two parties.

Veterinary guidelines for hip and elbow certification

The SAVA together with KUSA runs a national hip/elbow dysplasia certifying scheme according to guidelines set up by the FCI and the International Elbow Working Group. 

The grading of a dogs hips and elbows according to international standards gives breeders an idea of the hip and elbow status of their dogs which should be considered when breeding these animals. Several dog breeds have specific minimum grading requirements before the dog or bitch may be bred.

The radiographs taken by your veterinarian are sent to a veterinary radiologist, one of a group, appointed by the SAVA. These are veterinarians who are recognised as specialist radiologists by the SA Veterinary Council and some of them are also recognised as specialists by the European Association of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.  These radiologists give an opinion as individuals but an appeal process is in place for those owners who wish to do so.  KUSA will only accept HD & ED certificates from the members of the panel. The panel of radiologists appoints a chief scrutineer who acts as the liaison person between the radiologists, the SAVA and KUSA.

The criteria for making and submitting radiographs are very strict and are in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the international bodies.

Hip dysplasia examinations and radiographs are done from the age of 12 months except for large breeds. Large breeds must only be radiographed from the age of 18 months.

Breeds considered as large breeds are

• Bullmastiff and other mastiff types
• Great Dane
• Newfoundland
• Pyrenean Mountain Dog
• Saint Bernard
• Rottweilers are also considered as a large breed.

Elbow dysplasia radiographs can be done at the same time as Hip dysplasia radiographs, from the age of 12 months in all breeds except for the Rottweiler which should only be done from the age of 18 months.

Positive Identification

All examined dogs must be identified by means of a microchip.

All HD/ED radiographs must include the following in the metadata of digital images as permanent and accurate identification: microchip number, dog’s registered name, date of examination and name of Veterinary Clinic. Left and/or right markers must be included in the collimated area of the image.

Accuracy of results

Radiographs have to be of a satisfactory quality with the correct exposure and processing.

Views/Positioning for Radiography

For hip dysplasia X-rays, standard flexed and extended views are required.

For the extended view, the whole pelvis and the patellae must be included in the image. Positioning must be optimal with symmetry of the pelvis (equally sized obturator foramina and ilial wings). For large breeds, this usually requires a 30 X 40 cm film.

Also for the extended view, the femurs must be parallel to each other, the angle between the femoral necks and femoral shafts must be 135° and the patellae must be located cranially (dorsally) on the femurs.

For the flexed views, the femoral shafts should form an angle of 45° to the caudal lumbar vertebrae.

To achieve the above, general anaesthesia or deep sedation is required.

For elbow dysplasia radiographs, the following 2 views of the elbow, collimated to the elbow is required: - 100-120º ML-Extended view and Pronated CrCd view. The two views can be placed on one image/ cassette.

Digital image submission:

Once the radiographs have been taken, the veterinarian forwards them together with the application form including the signed declaration of the owner and veterinarian and copy of the dog’s registration certificate, to the scrutineer of choice with the applicable fee.

A CD with DICOM images can be submitted by post or courier. The CD must be clearly labelled providing the details of the patient. DICOM images may also be uploaded onto a Teleradiology server or using a large file transfer system. Please note that for digital submissions JPEG images are not acceptable. All requirements that apply to hard copy films, apply to digital submissions. No images will be accepted by e-mail.

Scrutineers send the results back to the veterinarian who in turn will inform the owner. The owner must contact the submitting veterinarian for the results, not the scrutineer. Requests for copies or amendments to certificates will carry an extra fee.

Radiographs that do not meet criteria will be returned to the referring veterinarian with an explanation as to the reason for the images being returned.  An administrative fee will be charged for the returning of radiographs.

Please note that the radiographs remain the property of the practice that made them and have to be kept by that practice for 3 years. Digital images are also kept by the veterinarian for 3 years.

SAVA /KUSA HD & ED Appeals Procedure:

An owner has the right to appeal the results of a HD grade given by a scrutineer. A second opinion may only be sought under the following conditions:

1. The original radiographs that were submitted for evaluation by the first scrutineer, are the only radiographs that may be resubmitted for evaluation by the second scrutineer. On rare occasions additional radiographs may be requested by the Radiologist doing the appeal and the costs of these radiographs will be for the dog owner’s account.
2. An application for appeal can only be submitted to scrutineers on the panel of specialist veterinary radiologists approved by the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA).
3. On the application form for hip and elbow certification, the referring veterinarian must indicate that a second opinion is being sought in accordance with the prescribed appeals procedure.
4. A copy of the report/certificate issued by the first scrutineer as well as a copy of the original application form/declaration must be attached to the appeals application.
5. Proof of payment of scrutineers’ fee must be provided.
6. If the result attained from the second scrutineer differs from the result attained from the first scrutineer, the best of the two results will be taken as the final result. The second scrutineer is required to inform the first scrutineer, the referring veterinarian and KUSA, of their evaluation and grade given.
7. Note that, if for example the second scrutineer gives a better grading for the hips but a worse grading for the elbows, then this grading will stand and the owner will have to live with a worse elbow grading. Should the hips receive a worse grading and the elbows a better grading, the original certificate will be valid with the better hip grading. This implies that for appeals, hips take precedence over elbows as some breeds have breeding restrictions for hip dysplasia but for most breeds there are no elbow dysplasia restrictions.
8. Only one appeal is allowed per dog
9. The final result/grade will be recorded on the KUSA data base and will be noted as a re-evaluation. However, on the Certificate of Registration and Annex to the Certificate of Registration all that will appear is the final HD or ED grade.
10. A dog may not be submitted more than once for hip or elbow dysplasia grading.

Copies of all HD/ED Certificates issued by all of the scrutineers on the panel, are sent directly to the KUSA office, for recording on the KUSA data base and serve to verify the authenticity of HD /ED certificates submitted directly to KUSA by owners. Thus, if an owner were to submit the first set of radiographs to another scrutineer or a second set of radiographs to any of the scrutineers, including the original scrutineer, without indicating that a second opinion is being sought, this would be picked up by the KUSA office, as the KUSA office would receive two HD/ED certificates for a single dog. Such action would be deemed as dishonest and unacceptable and contrary to the KUSA Code of Ethics.

In such cases, it would be necessary to review and re-evaluate the entire process followed and would be necessary to eliminate any doubt as to the authenticity and accuracy of the results given.

The Chief Scrutineer would be asked to obtain the radiographs from the referring veterinarian(s) and will give a final opinion taking into consideration all the radiographs. A fee of R600 will be charged by the Chief Scrutineer for this service.

The result determined by the Chief Scrutineer will be considered as the final binding result and will be the result recorded on the Certificate of Registration. Should the owner opt not to follow this option, then the grade determined by the first scrutineer will be considered as the official result and will be the result recorded on the Certificate of Registration.

Hip and elbow dysplasia evaluation remains a subjective opinion and thus it is possible for a different grade to be attained from two different scrutineers for the same dog evaluated from the same radiographs. The margin of difference however, tends to be minimal. The scrutineers are specialist veterinary radiologists that have studied an additional 3-4 years in order to specialise.

Many factors such as the quality of the radiograph image, the positioning of the dog, the age of the dog, muscle mass and even possibly oestrus, can influence the final determination of the grade given. The objective of the scrutineers is to give a fair, unbiased and expert opinion on the status of the dog’s hips, with the intention to minimise the possible transmission of unfavourable hip dysplasia genes to the progeny of the dog/bitch evaluated.

BREED SPECIFIC LITTER REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

MICROCHIPPING – refer to Schedule 2 Reg. 1.1.5

1. ALASKAN MALAMUTE LITTERS

1.1 Dam and Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/digital image and on the certificate.

1.2 Only Alaskan Malamutes with hip scores of A1, A2, B1 or B2 may be mated to Alaskan Malamutes with hip scores of C1 or C2. Alaskan Malamutes with hip scores of A1, A2, B1 or B2 may be mated to each other.

1.3 At the time of whelping, the Dam is twenty-two (22) months of age or older.

2. DOBERMANN LITTERS

2.1 Dam & Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The

microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/digital image and on the certificate.

2.2 The breeder is the current holder of a KUSA-registered Affix (Kennel Name).

2.3 Only Dobermanns with hip scores of A1, A2, B1 or B2 may be mated to each other.

3. GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG LITTERS

3.1 Dam & Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/digital images and on the certificate.

3.2 The breeder is the current holder of a KUSA-registered Affix (Kennel Name).

3.3 At the time of mating, the Sire is eighteen (18) months of age or older.

3.4 At the time of whelping, the Dam is twenty-two (22) months of age or older.

From 01.07.2019, Stud Dogs must comply with the following:

4.2 Only Giant Schnauzers with hip scores of A1, A2 and B1 may be mated to Giant Schnauzers with hip scores of B2, C1 or C2. Giant Schnauzers with hips scores of A1, A2 and B1 may be mated to each other.

5. RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK LITTERS

5.1 Dam & Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/Digital image and on the certificate.

5.2 Only Rhodesian Ridgebacks with hip scores of A1, A2 may be mated to Rhodesian Ridgebacks with hip scores of B1. Rhodesian Ridgebacks with hip scores of A1 or A2 may be mated to each other.

6. ROTTWEILER LITTERS

6.1 Dam & Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/Digital image and on the certificate.

6.2 Dogs must be presented for hip and elbow x-rays. At the time of x-ray a dog must be 18 months of age or older.

6.3 At the time of mating, the Sire is eighteen (18) months of age or older.

6.4 At the time of whelping, the Dam is twenty-two (22) months of age or older.

6.5 Only Rottweilers with hip scores of A1, A2, B1, B2 may be mated to Rottweilers with hip scores of C1 or C2. Rottweilers with hip scores of A1, A2, B1 or B2 may be mated to each other.

6.6 The elbow X-ray results must be submitted with the hip X-ray results, but are for record purposes only.

7. WEIMARANER LITTERS

7.1 Dam & Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/digital image and on the certificate.

7.2 Only Weimaraner with hip scores with A1, A2 and B1 may be mated to Weimaraner with hip scores of B2, C1 and C2. Weimaraner with hip scores of A1, A2 and B1 may be mated to each other.

8. BIEWER TERRIER REGISTRATIONS

8.1 Biewer Terriers must be DNA profiled and be DNA Parentage Verified, for acceptance for registration on any KUSA register. Only DNA Parentage Verification Certificates issued by the Onderstepoort Veterinary Genetic Laboratory (OPVGL) will be accepted. The dog’s microchip number must appear on the DNA Parentage Verification Certificate.

8.2. In the case of Biewer Terriers that are imported, DNA material will be required to be submitted to OPVGL for the issuing of a DNA Typing Certificate which must reflect the dog’s microchip number, DNA Profile Number and DNA ID Number. Applications for registration of imported Biewer Terrier will only be accepted if the required DNA Typing Certificate is attached to the KUSA Registration Application Form.

(DNA Parentage verification is not required for imported Biewer Terriers).

8.3 All Certificates of Registration issued to Biewer Terriers registered or re-registered with the Kennel Union must bear the OPVGL DNA Profile Number & DNA ID Number of the dog. 

9. SOUTH AFRICAN MASTIFF

9.1 Dam & Sire are positively identified by microchip before any X-ray examination is made. The microchip identification number is included on all developed X-ray film/digital images and on the certificate.

9.2 Must pass an official HD Test.

9.3 At the time of mating, the Sire is sixteen (16) months of age or older.

9.4 At the time of whelping, the Dam is fourteen (14) months of age or older.

9.5 Dam and Sire must be DNA-profiled.

9.6 Dam and Sire must have a Breed Grading of Good (G) or better.
