Why we use Adobe Portable Document Files (PDFs)
KUSA - The Kennel Union of Southern Africa

PDFs can be viewed using a free reader

To view documents marked with the icon, PDF, indicating an Adobe Portable Document File (PDF), you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 4.0 or higher, which is available free. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer you can download it free here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

PDFs preserve page layout (unlike HTML)

Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) is a fantastic way of overcoming the limitations of standard HTML. The PDF format has virtually no limitations and can display any document in a web browser exactly as it was created. The PDF document can also be printed with the resulting printout being an exact image of the original document.

PDFs can be hyper-linked and indexed for text searches

The PDF document can be searched in the same way as you can search in a HTML document. A PDF file can also display a table of contents, can contain hypertext links, can be zoomed into or out of and has numerous display options. PDFs are the standard for cross-platform electronic document distribution

PDF files can be opened reliably across a broad range of hardware and software

Versions of Acrobat Reader run on Windows XP, 2000, ME, NT, 98, 95 and 3.1, Macintosh, LINUX, IBM AIX, Sun SPARC SunOS, Sun SPARC Solaris, SGI IRIX, HP-UX, Digital Unix, OS/2 Warp, Pocket PC 2004, Palm OS and Symbian OS (Nokia Communicator 9000 series).

Why we use Adobe Portable Document Files (PDFs)

On the KUSA web site you will find many (over 350!) original documents. We constantly add to, update and revise these documents and we use a Document Management System (DMS) on our web site to help us with this task.

We use Adobe Portable Document Files (PDFs) throughout for all the documents that we publish.

PDF files are not just used on our site but are common throughout the Internet. It is also a "de-facto standard" for the distribution electronic documents so it is well worth your while to have it installed on your PC.
